Signs of workplace disability discrimination

On Behalf of | Mar 10, 2020 | Workplace Discrimination |

As an employee with a disability, you hope that your employer will always treat you with respect. Taking this one step further, you also hope that they’ll treat you in the same manner as everyone else, including those who are not disabled.

Unfortunately, disability discrimination remains a problem throughout the country, with many individuals finding themselves in a difficult position as a result. Here are some of the most common examples of workplace disability discrimination:

  • Bullying: This is the simplest form of disability discrimination to pinpoint, as it involves someone bullying you as a result of your condition.
  • Offensive comments: This involves someone or a group of people making offensive comments about your disability.
  • Different treatment: If you’re treated one way while other employees are treated another, there’s a chance it could be the result of your disability.
  • Lack of reasonable accommodations: Your employer is required by law to provide reasonable accommodations so that you can do your job. Neglecting to do so is a type of workplace disability discrimination.
  • Passed over for promotions: Just because you’re disabled in some manner doesn’t mean you should be looked over for a promotion that you’re qualified for.

These are just a few of the many signs of disability discrimination in the workplace. Should you or a loved one find yourself a victim, ask for clarification from your employer, collect evidence and learn more about your legal rights.

Don’t be happy enough that you have a job. Fight to ensure that you are treated the same as everyone else at your place of employment. It’s your legal right.
