Signs of religious discrimination at work

On Behalf of | Oct 3, 2019 | Workplace Discrimination |

Even though more and more people are tolerant of different races, creeds, genders and religions these days; problems still exist in our society. This means that it’s quite possible you could face discrimination at your place of employment due to your religious beliefs. Today, we will discuss the signs of religious discrimination at work that you should look for.

Did your employer fail to accommodate you because of your religious beliefs? This is one of the most common signs of religious discrimination. The only reason an employer does not have to accommodate an employee because of their religious beliefs is if it would cause some sort of undue hardship. Reasonable accommodations include any of the following:

  • Relaxing the dress code to permit religious apparel
  • Making changes in the employee’s schedule
  • Relaxing grooming policies

Have you been treated differently because of your religion? Your employer cannot make any decisions related to your employment based on your religious beliefs or practices. This means that they cannot demote you, fire you, reduce your hours, refuse to offer you employment or pass you over for a promotion. The same goes for those who do not hold any religious beliefs.

In order to prove religious discrimination, you will need to show that your employer made decisions regarding your employment status or punished you based solely on your religious beliefs and not due to your overall performance at work.

Religious discrimination is serious and all too real. Make sure you know the signs of this type of discrimination so you can file a complaint with a supervisor or with human resources. You should not be made to feel uncomfortable at work because of your beliefs.
