Putting a value to your wrongful termination claim

Being wrongfully terminated from your job can cause you a lot of stress and worry. You won't be receiving regular paychecks, and you might have trouble finding a new job in the immediate future. But, if you were wrongfully terminated, you can work with an attorney to file a claim against your former employer. Here's how a value is assigned to such as claim.

The first thing that will be taken into account when valuing a wrongful termination case is the amount of wages you lost out on since the day you were terminated. You still have a duty to find a new job in the meantime. If you do, those wages and any unemployment benefits you are paid will be deducted from this amount.

Your attorney should also take into account any and all lost benefits from the time you were terminated. Take, for example, if you wind up having to pay for your own health insurance after being terminated, the amount you spend on coverage could be added to the claim against your former employer.

Pain and suffering can also be added to the value of the wrongful termination claim. Why? If you suffered through depression, anxiety or any other emotional illness because of the wrongful termination, this can be added to the award requested from your former employer.

Wrongful termination is a serious issue that many employees deal with every year across New Jersey. If you ever become a victim of wrongful termination, make sure you protect your rights so that you resume working or recover compensation.
