Watch for these common forms of workplace discrimination

On Behalf of | Nov 23, 2018 | Workplace Discrimination |

Workplace discrimination comes in many forms. Knowing what discrimination looks like will go a long way in helping you protect yourself. You can’t protect your rights unless you know what they are.

Here are some of the most common forms of workplace discrimination:

  • Unequal pay: If two people have the same title and job responsibilities but a different pay scale, there’s a chance workplace discrimination could be the culprit.
  • Termination: This is as simple as it gets. A company terminates a person because of their sex, age, religion, race or something else that sets them apart from other employees.
  • Reduced responsibilities: This may not appear as serious as a termination, but it’s another form of workplace discrimination that impacts the workplace. For example, an employer may take responsibilities away from a woman and give them to a man.
  • Caps on advancement: Everyone hopes to make their way up the company ladder, however, some employers cap advancement on certain classes of workers. No matter how hard these people try, they’ll only go so high.
  • Positional bias: In today’s day and age, anyone can do any job with the right qualifications and experience. It shouldn’t be assumed that women are only suited to be secretaries. It shouldn’t be assumed that only men work in the construction industry.

It’s important to watch for these common forms of workplace discrimination, as you should never sit back and hope that your situation improves on its own.

If you’re a victim of workplace discrimination, regardless of the form, discuss the issue with your employer, seek information on your legal rights and do whatever it takes to protect yourself.
