Studies find that African-American women struggle to find jobs

Searching for a job can be difficult for anyone, but some studies have found that it is very tough for one key demographic: African-American women. They face hurdles to employment at an incredible rate.

For instance, despite the fact that these women have been getting college degrees more and more often over the years, statistics show that the private sector only employs about 8 percent of them. That's a strikingly low number. How many women with degrees still cannot find employment?

Those who keep searching for jobs may have to get positions that do not necessarily connect with their degrees. In fact, one report said that a startling 55.9 percent of African-American women have jobs that do not require college degrees at all. They are fundamentally underemployed. They make less in wages, on average, and that makes it hard to deal with all of the debt they have from going to college in the first place.

As you can see, it's not just about strict employment or whether they can find jobs. Even landing a job may still show that they are not getting the respect and employment they deserve. This makes the job market very hard for them and can lead to a host of financial problems.

Has this happened to you? Have you run into discrimination during the hiring process or in the workplace even after you got hired? It can be frustrating and even infuriating, especially after you worked hard for that college degree. Make sure you fully understand all of the legal options you have.
