If you believe that your employer is violating employee rights, it is not always easy to know what to do. Of course, you don’t want to sit silently and watch employee mistreatment happen, or suffer under it yourself.
You have an opportunity to stand up for justice and fair treatment, but you must take the first steps to get there. One of the first things you need to do is meet with your employer about the issue. Knowing how to behave in this meeting is crucial.
First, you should enter the meeting knowing what employee rights you have and how those rights are typically defended. When researching a specific right, be as detailed as possible. When you present your concerns to your employer, be direct and simple. It may be useful to practice this conversation with a person you trust or with an attorney who can help you troubleshoot any issues ahead of time.
The meeting itself may feel combative, so it is important to remain calm and professional. You are fighting for fair treatment and justice. There is no reason to get emotional or give in to baiting by an employer.
However the meeting goes, be sure to understand what our employer’s stated next step is to address the issue. If they say they’ll look into it, make a note to check back on that in a week or so. Sometimes, employers simply wish to sweep these problems under the rug and hope no one notices. This, however, is not justice in the workplace.
