In a blog written with the possible victims of labor and employment violations in mind, it is easy to get bogged down in the bad situations. With concerns that the gender gap hasn’t been closed yet, it is nice to know that New Jersey cities land on the list of the 10 cities with the highest average wage for women, based on U.S. Census data gathered in the 2012 American Community Survey.
In the number 5 slot were Trenton and Ewing with a median salary of $50,400 for women. The counties making up Northern New Jersey were grouped together in the eighth position on the list with a median salary of $47,600 for women.
The fact that New Jersey lands on the list not only once, but twice is the good news. Our readers have all probably heard the saying “Do you want the good news or the bad news first?” Well, we gave you the good news first.
The bad news is that, while maybe smaller in New Jersey than other parts of the nation, there is still a gap between the amount men and women are paid. In the top two New Jersey areas, women were still only paid 81 percent and 84 percent of the salaries that were paid to men in the same area.
Lower salaries, missed promotions or other adverse employment actions based on an individual’s sex could become the basis of a gender discrimination lawsuit. Those that believe or even suspect that they may be a victim can seek consultation with an attorney to determine if they may have a claim.
